The mechanical petrol injection system was developed based on an idea by Robert Bosch. A defined quantity of fuel is injected into the combustion chamber (direct injection) or suction chamber (manifold injection) in a defined time by means of a piston pump (pump element). The first mechanical direct injection system by the Bosch company was mounted in the ME 109 fighter aircraft in the 1930s. This resulted in a significantly higher engine performance.
In the motor vehicle industry, mechanical petrol injection using an injection pump introduced in the 1950s provided for higher engine performance combined with less fuel consumption.
