The mechanical petrol injection system was developed based on an idea by Robert Bosch. A defined quantity of fuel is injected into the combustion chamber (direct injection) or suction chamber (manifold injection) in a defined time by means of a piston pump (pump element). The first mechanical direct injection system by the Bosch company was mounted in the ME 109 fighter aircraft in the 1930s. This resulted in a significantly higher engine performance.

In the motor vehicle industry, mechanical petrol injection using an injection pump introduced in the 1950s provided for higher engine performance combined with less fuel consumption. The mechanics used are complex.
